The American Foxhound originates back to the early 1700 s in VA and MD where it was bred for hunting fox in both a pack, and solo situations. As a member of the Hound Group, the AKC recognized the breed in 1886. The Foxhound can be any color with a coarse short coat and must stand between 12-25 inches at the withers. George Washington ran a breeding program for this breed and references to his hounds can be found in his journals. In spite of being an American breed, it is also one of the rarest.
