The Bouvier des Flandres originated in France around the 19th century. When first developed, they had many different names such as vuilbaard which means “dirty beard”, or koehond, “cow dog”, and toucheur de boeuf or pic “cattle driver”. This breed is big, males can reach 100 pounds. They are powerful, agile and highly intelligent. With their devotion to their families it’s easy to see why their popularity has increased as it has. The Bouvier has a long thick double coat which protects them in any weather and can range in color from fawn to black, passing and including salt and pepper, grays and even brindles. Their ears can be cropped or uncropped. In 1931 the AKC recognized the Bouvier des Flandres in the Herding Group. Today’s Bouvier is just as comfortable in the show ring as running on the farm.
