The Pointer, or English Pointed as it was initially called, is believed to originated in Spain where they were known as the Spanish Pointer. This version was much heavier and stockier than the Pointer known today. The breed continued to develop in England after the end of the War of Spanish Succession in the early 1700’s. The Pointer has a short, smooth coat which can be liver, lemon, black or orange either in combination with white or solid colored. The average life expectancy of the Pointer is 12 to 15 years. This hunting dog required both physical and mental exercise daily to remain happy and healthy. The Westminster Kennel Club has used a pointed as their logo since they began. The AKC recognized the breed in the Sporting Group in 1884. This breed ranges in size from 23 inches to 28 inches tall at the withers and 44 to 75 pounds in weight.
