The Schipperke originated in Belgium and there is debate about if their relatives are black sheepdogs called Leauvenaar, or a Spitz. This little dog is naturally curious which usually leads to some trouble, this explains the breed’s nickname of “little black devil dog”. The Schipperke has a thick double coat with a fluffy undercoat covered by a harsh feeling outer coat. This breed does shed moderately so regular brushing is recommended to keep the coat and your furniture in good condition. Puppies are born with tails of different lengths which are docked here in America. Other countries, having banned docking, allow natural tails, some of which can curl up over the back. This breed has no particular health problems so it is not uncommon for dogs to reach the age of 17 or 18 years old. This breed can weigh 7-20 pounds and standing 10 to 13 inches tall at the withers when full grown making them the perfect size for apartments as long as they are taken out for walks for exercise. The AKC recognized the Schipperke in the Non-Sporting Group in 1904.
