The Akita originates from Japan where it hunts for large game such as bear, elk and boar and is referred to as “the silent hunter”. The AKC recognized the Akita in 1972 but the first one arrived in the United States in 1937, brought here by Helen Keller. This breed in a member of the Working Group and ranges in size from 24 to 28 inches tall at the withers. Any and all color variations are acceptable.
