Alaskan Malamutes are the largest and oldest of the arctic sled dog breeds. The breed originated in America, and was named after the Innuit tribe called Mahlemuts that lived in Alaska. Alaskan Malamutes are extremely strong and bread for endurance. This breed is in the working group and the AKC recognized the breed in 1935. They range in size from 23 to 25 inches tall at the shoulders and weight between 75 and 85 lbs. Even though they require firm training and discipline they have proven themselves as super family pets as well agility and therapy dogs.
