The Basset Hound is a scent hound which originated in France as a trailer of small game hunters would follow on foot. George Washington had Basset Hounds for hunting. The Basset is easily recognized due to its big heavy body, short legs and long ears. They can come in any hound color including any combination of black, tan, white, red or any other color. Recognized by the AKC in 1885, in the Hound Group, the Basset should not exceed 14 inches in height at the withers and is considered not only a superb hunting dog alone or in packs, but due to his gentle nature and intelligence the Basset Hound does very well in confirmation, obedience, tracking, and field trialing
