The Beagle goes back to the 1500’s when most English Gentlemen had a pack of them for hunting rabbit. The origin of the name, however, is thought to be a French word “be’geule” which refers to the baying noise of the hounds when chasing game. The AKC first recognized the breed, in the Hound Group, in 1885, and today there are two size variations; the 13” and the 15” heights at the withers. Due to the Beagle’s hunting ability, and its great personality, it is one of the most popular breeds as per the AKC Registration Statistics. The most famous Beagle, U.S. History was SNOOPY for the comic strip “Peanuts”.
