The Bichon Frise is a cheerful, playful breed who happily carries its fluffy tail over its back. It is thought they originated in the Mediterranean area in the 13th century, descending from the Water Spaniel. Bichons are referred to as looking like a cotton ball due to their curled bright white double coat, which continues to grow thru out their lives making constant grooming a must. They do not shed, however, making them ideal for people with allergies. The AKC recognized the breed in the Non-Sporting Group in 1972. Proper height would range from 9 ½ to 11 ½ inches at the withers. While having been the focal point in paintings in Spain, owned by royalty, used as circus dogs, today the Bichon Frise is a great therapy dog and of course companion.
