The Border Terrier is definitely one of the oldest terrier breeds. Originating on the border between Scotland and England this alert, active and agile dog was bred to protect the farm stock and hunt fox. Back on the farm, in the 18th century, this hardy little dog had to find its own food, so being a great hunter was a must to survive. The Border Terrier is described as having an otter head and coarse coat in red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten, with a dark muzzle. The AKC recognized the breed in 1930 in the Terrier Group. Today’s Border Terrier is thought to be nearly identical to the original ones and still range in weight from 11 to 15 pounds.
