The Borzoi originated in Russia, developed by crossing the Arabian Greyhounds with a thick-coated Russian breed. The Borzoi is a sight hound, meaning they hunt using sight, not scent. This breed was created to hunt wolves, fox and hare in hunting parties of over 100 dogs in Russia. Until 1936 the Borzoi was known in the USA as the Russian Wolfhound. With a weight some times topping 100 pounds, the Borzoi is the largest of the sight hound breeds averaging 28 to 32 inches tall at the withers. Due to their grace and beauty, they have been featured in artwork for hundreds of years. In 1891 the Borzoi was recognized by the AKC in the Hound Group.
