The Boxer originated in Germany, called the “Bullenbeiser”. Designed to run down and hold large game like buffalo, boar and bear until the hunter could arrive, the breed stood on its back legs, up right, and batted at their opponent, thereby giving them the appearance of “boxing”. Imported to America after World War I the breed quickly became a favorite of families and they desire human affection, especially from children. They are patient and protective, require daily exercise and little grooming. Since 1904 the AKC has had the Boxer in the Working Group. They range in height from 21 ½ to 25 inches tall at the withers and are a perfect hunter, guard dog and companion.
