The Brittany originated in the 1850’s from a cross between the English Setters and the French Spaniels. It was named after the French city it was first produced in. At that time, however, it was called the Brittany Spaniel. This breed is an excellent bird hunter, and while they also make perfect house dogs or therapy dogs, it is happiest when busy. The Brittany has a dense flat or wavy coat, which is either orange and white, or liver and white. The AKC recognized the Brittany in the Sporting Group in 1934. Its average size is 30 to 40 pounds, with a height of 17 ½ to 20 ½ inches at the withers
