The Bull Terrier dates back to the early 1800’s. It is thought to have been a cross between the Bulldog and the White English Terrier and quickly earning the nickname the “White Cavalier”. In the early 1900’s the Bull Terrier was crossed with a brindle Staffordshire to create the colored variety of this breed. In spite of their tough appearance, this breed is playful and clownish….described as a three year old child in a dog suit. After a playful active puppyhood, plan on spending a lot of time on the couch. The AKC recognized the breed in 1885, and unlike other breeds, there is no size standard for this breed, but they seem to average 21 to 22 inches tall at the withers and weight 50 to 70 pounds. This breed gained in popularity, here in the United States, with the introduction of “Spuds McKenzie” the spokes dog in advertising.
