The Bullmastiff was a cross between the Mastiff and Bulldog breeds. The intent was to create a dog to protect estates in England from poachers in the 1800’s. Nicknamed the “Gamekeeper’s Night Dog” the Bullmastiff was not recognized by England as a purebred until 1925, then ten years later by the AKC, in the Working Group, in 1935. The Mastiff can range in size from 24 to 27 inches tall at the withers, and weight 100 to 130 pounds. In spite of their large size, they are agile and a loyal protector of their family. The breed does not bark much, as they were bred to sneak up on poachers, but their over all presence is very impressive, and usually is all that is needed.
