Calico, like tabby, is no a breed of cat, but rather a color pattern. Calico means there are patches of three colors on the cat, black, white and orange, or variation of each. If the three colors are swirled together, or you are outside the USA the pattern is called a tortoise shell and is still within the calico definition. Most Calico cats will be female due to the genetics behind coat color determination. In 2001 the State of Maryland made the Calico cat their official cat. Some breeds of cats with Calico in their list of colors include, but are not limited to; Manx, American Shorthair, British Shorthair, Persian, Siamese and Turkish Van.
