The Dalmatian is thought to have originated in the region of Dalmatia, in the Republic of Croatia around 1792. Dalmatian puppies are born all white and their spots only begin to show after a week after birth. This breed, while best known in the standard white back ground with black spots, is also seen with liver colored spots, or in even more rare cases, blue, brindle, mosaic, tri-colored, orange or lemon spots on a white back ground. The Dalmatian has been used as a coach dog, running along side a horse drawn coach, at the fire station as a mascot, and as a hunting dog. This breed loves being part of a family and is happiest when busy. The popularity of this breed skyrocketed when the Disney movie 101 Dalmatians came out, and when Anheuser-Busch used a Dalmatian as their mascot on TV commercials. The AKC recognized the Dalmatian in 1888 in the Non-Sporting Group. Their coats are short and require little grooming. Dalmatians range in size from 19 to 23 inches tall at the withers.
