The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is the only breed of dog named after a fictional character. In 1814 Sir Walter Scott wrote about these dogs in Guy Mannering. In that story, the farmer’s name was Dandie Dinmont and that character’s dog’s names became the names of the colors accepted in this breed; pepper and mustard. The Dandie originated on the border of Scotland and England around 1700 and was designed to hunt and chase otter and badger, it is low and sturdy, but its description would not be complete without mentioning its “sword-shaped” tail and the tuff of hair on its head. This breed is affectionate with its family, but has little, to no interest in strangers. They do not shed, but do need to be stripped twice a year, and brushed daily. The AKC recognized this breed in 1886 in the Terrier Group. The average size should be 8 to 10 inches tall at the withers and weight of 18 to 24 pounds.
