The Finnish Spitz is the national dog of Finland, where it originated. In Finland it is called Suomenpystrykova which means Finnish Cock-Eared Dog. This breed is a barking pointer, this means as a hunting dog they bark when prey is found and point to its location when the hunter is near. They have been used to hunt birds, small animals and ever bear. The Finnish Spitz has a lush red double coat which does shed and will require brushing, but they are a very clean dog overall. They have what has been called a fox-like face and ears and their tail is fluffy and held over their backs. The AKC recognized the breed in the Non-Sporting Group in 1991. Being drawn to children, this breed makes an excellent addition to growing families.
