The Flat-Coated Retriever originated in England in the mid-19th century. It is commonly believed that came from a cross between the now extinct St. John’s Water Dog, the Newfoundland, the Collie and a Setter breed. This breed comes in two acceptable colors, black and liver; the coat is a single coat (no undercoat) and is long shiny and straight. According to the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America the average life span of this breed is only about 10 years with the highest percentage of deaths due to cancer. The Flat-Coated Retriever is happiest when working; he needs daily vigorous exercise, and does well in obedience, agility and hunting competitions. The AKC recognized the breed in the Sporting Group in 1915. Their ideal size is 22 to 24 1/2 inches tall at the withers.
