The French Bulldog derives its beginning in England, however the final steps in producing this breed were taken in France, as the name implies. They were designed simply as a toy bull dog, a lap version of their bigger cousin, strictly as a companion dog. The French Bulldog, or “Frenchie” as it is more commonly called, have a short, easy to groom coat that comes in four acceptable colors; brindle, fawn, white and brindle with white, any other color is considered NOT a breed standard. Their tail is naturally short and is not docked as with some other breeds. Due to their flat faces, the French Bulldog can not regulate their temperature in hot weather. The must always have access to water and shade and air conditioning is recommended in the hot summer. The AKC recognized the breed in 1898 in the Non-Sporting Group.
