The Gordon Setter originated in Scotland back in the early 17th century. The hunters of Scotland thought this black and tan dog was a perfect bird dog. This breed also has extreme loyalty to their family, especially the children making them very popular with active families. Their long black and tan coats require brushing to avoid matting and they need daily rigorous exercise to stay in good physical and mental health. The Gordon is the heaviest of the setter breeds and what they lack in speed, they make up for in endurance. The AKC recognized this breed in 1884 in the Sporting Group. They range in size from 23 to 27 inches tall at the withers and weight 45 to 80 pounds.
