The Great Dane is not from Denmark as their name implies, they originated in Germany to hunt wild boar and was originally called the Boar Hound when it first came to America in the late 19th century. The Great Dane is a true gentle giant, in spite of their tremendous size; they are extremely gentle, compassionate and devoted to family. This breed comes in six acceptable colors; brindle, blue, black, fawn, harlequin and mantle. Mantle is the rarest color and is basically black and white, but unlike harlequin, the mantle coloring will have a solid black “blanket” over the body, a white collar and white chest and legs. Spotting is allowed on the legs and tail. No matter what the color, the coat is short and requires minimal brushing. Ears are usually cropped to be shown, but can be either cropped or uncropped if dog is a pet. The AKC recognized the Great Dane in the Working Group in 1887. Size ranges from 28 inches at the withers for females and 30 inches for males.
