The Italian Greyhound is an ancient breed most likely dating as far back as 4000 years ago in the countries now known as Greece and Turkey. The Italians of the 16th century grew fond of the breed and claimed it as their own. This breed is the smallest of the sight hounds so owners must take care because even the most well behaved dogs will chase small animals and they run with what’s called a “double suspension gallop” meaning in full stride they have all four legs completely off the ground like their larger relatives the Greyhound. This breed loves being with its family and enjoys the company of adults and children alike. Due to their slender build care is needed when playing with them as injury could occur easily. They are playful and intelligent and usually easy to train, plus they adapt well to country or city life and should always be on a harness or in a fenced in yard. Their coat is as smooth as satin which makes them one of the easiest breeds to groom. The AKC recognized the breed in 1886 in the Toy Group. The Italian Greyhound ranges in size of 13-15 inches tall at the withers.
