The Jack Russell Terrier or Parson Russell Terrier was named after the founder Parson John “Jack” Russell in the early 19th century. The AKC does not list a Jack Russell Terrier, only the Parson Russell Terrier, yet the National Club is still called the Jack Russell Terrier Club with a branch off called the Parson Russell Terrier. This breed is a working dog, a true hunter; it’s not the breed for everyone. They were designed to chase and hold small prey like fox, badger, and rat above or below ground until the hunter could arrive. Many Jack Russell Terriers have appeared on TV and the movies. The USA the most well known Jack Russell char actor is Eddie from the hit TV show Frasier which was actually played by two dogs. His char actor received more fan mail than any of the other actors. Those two same dogs also played the star roll in the movie Hotel for Dogs. The AKC recognized this breed in the Terrier Group in 1997. The ideal size ranges from 13 to 14 inches at the withers and a weight of 13 – 17 pounds. Their coat is primarily white with black or brown spots and can be smooth or rough.
