The origin of the Keeshond is not quite clear, but it is thought that they were brought into Holland by the Vikings during the 9th century. Over the years this breed has been known by several different names including Dutch Barge Dog, Smiling Dutchman, Chien Loup, German Spitz, Deutscher Wolfspitz and Wolfspitz. The plural version of Keeshond is Keeshonden….interesting. This breed is affectionate, good natured, love children, outgoing and friendly with people and other dogs. They are very intelligent, intuitive and empathic and are often used as comfort dogs as was the case at Ground Zero in NYC where they were brought in to comfort the rescue workers. The AKC recognized this breed in the Non-Sporting Group in 1930. The ideal size for a Keeshond ranges from 17 to 18 inches tall at the withers.
