The Komondor is one of the easiest breeds to recognize due to their impressive white long coat that naturally forms tassels or cords. Puppies are born pure white and fluffy, and as they mature their coat begins to become curly, with the undercoat being entwined into the outer coat. Some help may be required to help separate the cords as they grow, to ensure the dog does not become a matted mess. The coat will have grown in completely by about 2 years old. New owners should learn how to help the coat along from a professional breeder. This coat is the heaviest in the dog world, and is heavy to help the breed protect themselves from the bite of wolves while they guard their flock or herd. Developed in Hungary, the Komondor has officially been declared one of Hungary’s national treasures and are protected from any modification. Many Komondors were killed during World War II because the buildings they were guarding could not be captured while the Komondor was alive to protect his home. The AKC recognized this breed in the Working Group in 1937. The ideal size is approximately 25 inches tall at the withers and weighs approximately 80 pounds and up.
