The Kuvasz originated in Tibet, but the breed, as we know it today was developed in Hungary. The name Kuvasz comes from the Turkish word “Kavasz” which means “armed guard of the nobility”. They have a double coat of lush white, with black lips, nose and eyelids or points. While their coats appear straight in the show ring, this is from blow drying and they can actually have a wavy coat as well. The white coat was bred that way intentionally because the farmers used that bright white to tell their dog from the wolves attacking their flocks at night. The typical litter size is 7 or 8 pups and their life span is approximately 10 to 12 years. The plural for this breed is “Kuvaszok”. The AKC recognized the Kuvasz in the Working Group in 1931. This large breed ranges in size from 26 to 30 inches tall at the withers and 70 to 115 pounds.
