The Landseer originated in Germany and Switzerland. In the USA the Landseer is considered a black and white version of the Newfoundland and not recognized by the AKC separately. The Landseer in Europe has longer legs, and is not as massive as Newfoundland’s. The Landseer has a thick lush double coat and while they do have black markings, their legs, belly and chest should be white with a white muzzle and white symmetrical blaze on their head. The average life expectancy of this breed is under 10 years old. Their paws are webbed making them good swimmers and they have been used by fisherman to tow nets back to shore. Their Dewclaws should be removed on the hind legs. The tail should hang down. The dog in the famous children’s story Peter Pan was originally a Landseer, since that time; however, it has been changed to a Saint Bernard or Great Pyrenees.
