The Newfoundland originated in the Dominion of Newfoundland, now part of Canada. They were bred as working dogs, hauling carts, pulling in fisherman’s nets and any other heavy work around the farm. They have a heavy double coat and also double webbed paws. Their coat can be black, brown, gray or black and white, which is known in the USA as Landseer. Unlike other breeds, however, the coat color comes second to type, structure and soundness. The Newfoundland’s average height is 26 to 28 inches at the withers with a weight of 100 to 150 pounds. These dogs truly are gentle giants; they are loving, loyal and their life-saving instincts make them the perfect water rescue dog and companion dog for child or adult. Over the years there have been many famous Newfoundlands; Brumus who was Robert F. Kennedy’s Newfie, Carlo belonged to Emily Dickinson, Hector was owned by President Rutherford B. Hayes and then there’s Rigel who was the beloved pet of first officer William Murdoch aboard the Titanic. Murdoch went down with the ship but Rigel swam for three hours next to a lifeboat until it was rescued. The AKC recognized this breed in the Working Group in 1886.
