The Norwegian Elkhound is the National Dog of Norway. This is an ancient breed and was a hunting, guard dog and companion to the Vikings. In Scandinavia, where it originated, this breed is a fearless hunter of moose, elk, bear and wolves. The Norwegian Elkhound is a scent hound, meaning it relies on its sense of smell to search out what it’s looking for. While remaining very independent, this breed is fiercely loyal to its master and family. The USA didn’t see this breed until they were imported in the early 1900’s and today they continue to be active family dogs, companions, and competitors in breed, obedience and agility. The AKC recognized the Norwegian Elkhound, in the Hound Group in 1913. Average weight is 40-70 pounds and average height is 18-21 inches tall at the withers. Their thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year.
