The Papillon is an old breed and it’s said Marie Antoinette had a small spaniel, which looks like a Papillon. This breed has two versions; the Papillon with is French for butterfly, due to its standing, hair-covered ears, and the Phalenes, which is French for moth and is the drop eared of the same breed, in fact, both types can be born in the same litter and are shown together as one breed. The Papillon has a long, silky single layer coat which must be either parti-color or white with patches of any color. An important note here is that the AKC says both ears must be completely colored on the front and back or it is considered a fault. This tiny spaniel is a happy, friendly adventurous companion dog and they should not be shy or aggressive. They range in size from 8 to 11 inches tall at the withers, and should not be over 12 inches tall. AKC recognized this breed, the two versions together, in the Toy Group in 1915.
