The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or PBGV as they are more commonly called, originated in France and it’s name directly translates to a accurate description of this breed; Petit – small, Basset – low to the ground, Griffon – rough or wire coat, and Vendeen – the area of France where they were developed. The PBGV is a scent hound and an excellent hunter and tracker. This breed is active and requires daily vigorous exercise to stay in shape physically and mentally. Being a true hound, if their “pack” begins to howl, they gladly join in, but will also howl to music, for fun or in protest of having been left alone. The average life expectancy is approximately 12-13 years old, but still being studied. Average size should be 12 – 15 inches tall at the withers with a weight of 25 to 40 pounds. Their coat can be bicolor, tricolor or any combination of orange, lemon, black, grizzle, or sable with or without tan accents. The AKC recognized the PBGV in the Hound Group in 1990.
