As their name implies the Portuguese Water Dog, or PWD, originated in Portugal. This breed has webbed paws and can work a full day on land or in the water with fisherman. The coat of this breed can be curly or wavy and can come in black, white, brown or combinations of black or brown with white. While there is no such thing as a totally hypoallergenic dog breed, since the PWD does not shed fur, it tends to be better for people with allergies than other breeds might be. The coat can be kept in one of two trimming styles; the retriever, which is approximately 1 inch of fur all over the body, or the lion cut, which is shaved down to the skin on the muzzle and from the last rib back leaving the tail long and the front long. Being a working dog, this breed required daily vigorous exercise. US Senator Ted Kennedy owned three PWD’s and gave a puppy to President Obama and his family. The AKC recognized the PWD in the Working Group in 1983.
