The Rottweiler was brought along for the invasion of Europe, by the Romans. This medium to large size dog, ranging in size from 22 to 27 inches tall at the withers, is compact and muscular and has a short docked tail. The only acceptable color is a solid black body with rust or mahogany markings or points. In the early 1900’s the Germans bred Rottweiler’s for herding and as guard dogs. As the need for this service diminished, the Rottie almost became extinct. The breed has not changed much since being brought back into popularity for everything including law enforcement, carting, search and rescue and therapy work. The AKC recognized the breed in 1930 in the Working Group.
