The Saluki is an ancient breed, they were found mummified in tombs in Egypt where they were referred to as the royal dog of Egypt, and date back more than 2000 BC. The Saluki is a sight hound and can chase down Gazelle. This cat-like, independent breed has gone by several names, such as Persian Greyhound, Gazelle Hound, and Arabian Hound. Today the Saluki is popular at lure coursing events and show rings. This breed comes in two variations, the smooth and the feathered which has feathers of hair on its legs and tail. Their smooth silky single coat can come in white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, plus tricolor and black & tan. The Saluki range in size from 23 to 28 inches tall at the withers with the females being on the smaller end. This breed has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years of age. The AKC recognized the Saluki in the Hound Group in 1929.
