The Samoyed is an ancient working breed that takes its name from the Samoyedic people of Siberia who valued these dogs so highly they would allow the dogs inside their tents. The alternative name for this breed in Europe is “Bjelkier”. This medium sized, double coated fluffy white dog sports what people call a Samoyed Smile because the ends of their mouths turn upward like a smile! They are usually pure white but can be cream as well. As a working dog, the Samoyed is happiest when they have a job to do, they were bred to herd reindeer, pull a cart or sled and be an all around multi purpose dog so they enjoy having duties to get done, even if it’s just a game of fetch in the yard. As a herding dog, owners must take caution because these dogs will try to herd animals and people they think need it. The AKC recognized the Samoyed in the Working Group in 1906. Average size ranges from 19 to 23 inches tall at the withers.
