The Maine Coon Cat has it’s origin in Maine, as the name implies. It is a long haired breed with several color variations. While there are many tall tales about how this breed came to be, the most likely seems to be that when ships arrived from other countries, back in colonial times, they often had cats aboard to hunt mice. When the Maine winters came, only the hardiest of breeds survived and this is exactly what the Maine Coon Cat is. This breed can weigh 12 to 18 pounds, but complete coloring and weight will not be accurate until the age of 3 or 4 years old.
