The Skye Terrier originated and was named after the Island of Skye off the shores of Scotland. This breed was developed to hunt the vermin that preyed on the farmer’s live stock. Their long hair must be brushed several times weekly to keep from matting, but came in very handy protecting the dog from attack and the harsh weather in Scotland. Originally this breed had drop ears, but when Queen Victoria took an interest in the breed, causing the popularity to sky rocket, the prick eared version was preferred and how the breed is known today. This breed’s devotion to its family is tremendous. An example of this is a Skye Terrier named “Greyfriar’s Bobby” who guarded the grave of his master, Constable John Gray, for fourteen years until Bobby died at the age of sixteen, after which a statue was erected in Edinburgh in his honor. The AKC recognized this breed in the Terrier Group in 1887. The average weight of this breed is 35 to 45 pounds and they have been described as an elegant, dignified, agile vermin hunter.
