The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier originated in Ireland where they were referred to as the “Poor Man’s Wolfhound”. It is commonly believed this breed came from the crossing of the Kerry Blue and the Irish Terrier and originally served as an all purpose farm dog. There are four coat varieties for this breed, the traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English and America. Puppies are born with a dark coat of red, brown, mahogany or sometimes white, which lightens to the color of wheat, hence their name. Like the Poodle, their single layered coat continues to grow and they shed minimally, so if brushed daily, they will not need to be trimmed. The AKC recognized this breed in the Terrier Group in 1973. Average size should be 17 to 19 inches tall at the withers with a weight of 30 to 45 pounds.
