Like many ancient cat breeds, the exact detail of the Japanese Bobtail’s beginnings comes from rumor and stories. One such story says that a cat with a long tail accidently caught its tail on fire in the home’s hearth. The cat ran around the home catching the entire building on fire. In the morning the entire city had been destroyed and the emperor declared that all cats must have their tails cut short to avoid such a tragedy in the future. The Japanese Bobtail does have a tail about 4” long but it’s curly so it appears shorter. This breed comes in any number of colors and variations. This breed is considered a sign of good luck in Japan to this day.
