The Vizsla, pronounced “Veesh-la”, originated in Hungary. This breed was nearly extinct by the end of the World Wars, but it gradually regained popularity and was first imported into the USA in the 1950’s. This hunting breed has an excellent nose and is extremely trainable, making him a hunter’s favorite. The only color recognized for this robust breed is the short haired, smooth coated golden rust, and while some times confused for other breeds, a pure bred Vizsla will always have a nose the same color as the coat. Any other color nose and it is not a pure bred Vizsla. Life expectancy of the Vizsla is approximately 12-15 years and average size is 21 to 24 inches tall at the withers. Due to his natural athleticism this breed does best with an active family able to give him rigorous daily exercise. The AKC recognized the Vizsla in the Sporting Group in 1960.
