The Welsh Corgi Cardigan, or “the Corgi with a tail” is the older of the two Welsh Corgi breeds. It is, however, an entirely different breed than the Welsh Corgi Pembroke and not just a variation as most people think. This breed was brought to Wales by the Celts in approximately 1200 BC. Welsh Corgi means “dwarf dog” in Welsh, but in spite of their low height, this breed was bred as an all purpose farm worker. Coat colors for the Cardi include red, sable, brindle, black and blue merle with white markings on the neck, chest, legs, muzzle, belly, tip of the tail, and a blaze running up the head called an “Irish Pattern”. The Cardi is a big dog in a small package, they are loyal with a delightful sense of humor, this, along with their high intelligence and trainability, make this breed an excellent family dog. The average life expectancy of this breed is 11-13 years old and they range in size from 10 to 12 inches tall at the shoulders with a weight of 25 to 38 pounds with the males being slightly larger than the females. The AKC recognized this breed in the Herding Group in 1935.
