The West Highland Terrier originated in the Highlands of Scotland and was originally called the Poltalloch Terrier named after that city. They were also called the Roseneath Terrier and that is the name they used when first shown in the USA in 1906. In 1909 the name was changed a third time to the West Highland Terrier as they are known today, or more commonly as the “Westie”. This compact little ball of energy is best known for its bright white double coat which does require brushing and grooming on a regular basis. The AKC recognized the breed in 1908 in the Terrier Group. Designed as a vermin hunter, today’s Westie enjoys life as a companion dog and averages 10 to 11 inches tall at the withers.
