They were also called the Roseneath Terrier and that is the name they used when first shown in the USA in 1906. In 1909 the name was changed a third time to the West Highland Terrier as they are known today, or more commonly as the Westie . This compact little ball of energy is best known for its bright white double coat which does require brushing and grooming on a regular basis. The AKC recognized the breed in 1908 in the Terrier Group. Designed as a vermin hunter, today s Westie enjoys life as a companion dog and averages 10 to 11 inches tall at the withers.
