The Whippet originated in England hundreds of years ago where it is thought to be the result of crossing a Greyhound with a terrier breed. Whippets were initially brought to America by the English mill operators of Massachusetts, which was the center of Whippet racing in the US. Having such a slender build, and thin sleek coat, this breed is NOT an outside dog and would prefer to be inside with their humans. They do need daily exercise but enjoy being couch potatoes too. For its size, the Whippet is the fastest domesticated animal, capable of speeds up to 36 MPH. With this speed, and the fact they are a sight hound, this is the reason not to let them run free outside unless in a fenced in area because they could literally run away and become lost in minutes. The coloring of this breed is considered immaterial so they come in any range of colors and patterns. The average size of a Whippet is 15 to 30 pounds with a height of 17 to 22 inches tall at the withers, with the US Whippets commonly larger than Whippets from other countries. The average life expectancy of the Whippet is 12 to 15 years old. The AKC recognized the Whippet in the Hound Group in 1888.
