Since records have been kept on cat breeds in Europe, the Persian has always been near the top in popularity. It is thought this breed was brought to Europe around the 1500’s from Persia (now Iran). America didn’t’ see its first Persian until the 1800’s but it was quickly accepted as a favorite of the cat world. This breed takes a considerable amount of maintenance due to its long silky double coat, which must be brushed very frequently to avoid mats and can come in as many as 80 different colors and patterns. Persians can remain still for long periods of time and this is how they acquired the nickname “furniture with fur”.
