The Wire Fox Terrier originated in England where it was bred to hunt fox and small vermin. Although the Wire Fox Terrier looks very similar to the Smooth Fox Terrier, it is believed they were developed separately and are not just variations of each other. The coat of this breed is course and mostly white with brown markings and usually black spots on the body. While this coat sheds very little, it should be stripped by hand and not trimmed because this makes the coat soft and curly and harder to keep clean. This breed is friendly and playful making them excellent family dogs for children. While today’s Wire Fox Terrier is seldom used for the hunting for which is was designed, it will carry those instincts with it and will dig tirelessly for vermin, even in the flower garden. The average size for this breed is 15 to 21 lbs and should not exceed 15 ½ inches tall at the withers. The AKC recognized this breed in the Terrier Group in 1885.
