The name Dachshund literally means “badger dog” in German, where this breed originated in the 1600’s. Their long, low bodies were designed to allow them to chase after badger, and other den-dwelling animals right under ground. They have a keen sense of smell, and are very intelligent. The Dachshund comes in three types, smooth coat, long coat and wired coat with a standard and miniature version of each type. The Miniature versions are 11 pounds or under, and the standard size ranges from 16-32 pounds. Coloring is usually black and tan, or red, but could also include brindle, sable and merles. The AKC recognized the breed in 1885 in the Hound Group. Today’s Dachshund does well in agility, tracking events, conformation and as a loving family companion.
